This week, we're shining the spotlight on one of our very own! Mikaela Bouwmeester (Boxall), our Central Football Community Development Officer and former NZ Futsal Fern.
You may already be familiar with Mikaela if you've followed her impressive football and futsal journey. She has played for Central Football Futsal and National Women's League teams, and has truly stood out as a remarkable player at the W League level for Palmerston North Marist.
But Mikaela's passion doesn't stop at her own success. She is incredibly enthusiastic about inspiring the younger generation and is always ready to lend a helping hand to others, really making a difference on and off the field.
Q: When did your football journey begin and what inspired you to start playing?
A: I started playing football at a young age, right in my own backyard (and sometimes even inside the house!) with my Dad. Those moments of kicking the ball around hold a special place in my childhood memories, and my passion for the game remains as strong as ever.
Q: Can you tell us about the different roles you've had in your football journey?
A: Well, for the most part, I've been a player all along. But recently, I've started exploring the coaching side of things! I consider myself incredibly lucky to have landed the role as a Community Development Officer for the Manawatu region. It's a dream come true, really. I never imagined I could actually work in the sport I'm so passionate about. This role has truly opened my eyes to the endless possibilities that exist in football beyond just playing on the field.
Q: What challenges have you faced in your footballing journey?
A: Being the one girl out on the field at lunch time or in a team. It was extremely disheartening, but I am so glad I stuck at it. It makes me extremely happy to see the progression of our sport, and especially having the FIFA Womens World Cup here in New Zealand, we are heading in the right direction!
Q: What advice would you give to girls/women looking to progress into leadership roles in football?
A: Don't be afraid! You have the ability to do it, and I guarantee you'll have a blast along the way!
Q: What are your proudest achievements or favourite memories along the way?
A: My proudest moment would be hearing the national anthem for the first time representing Aoteroa for futsal. I don’t think anything will beat that.
Q: What part of the game brings you the most enjoyment?
A: I absolutely love it when a child learns a new skill. There's nothing quite like the sheer joy I feel when I see that player's face light up with a big smile because they've finally realized they can do it.
Q: So, what's on the horizon for Mikaela in the football world?
A: Well, I'm really excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for me at Central Football. I'll be diving deeper into my role there and working on delivering some awesome programs for the kids in our region.
