This week saw New Zealand’s Mens premier knock out cup competition kick off with the regional preliminary round of the Chatham Cup.

Men’s Federation Cup
The Men’s Federation Cup game of the round we had Chillmax Takaro AFC Jokers hosting GJ Gardner Homes Whanganui Athletic Reserves. Both these sides have got off to strong starts in the Western premiership, so this was expected to be a great cup tie. It would be Takaro who would get off to the best start with a 10th minute goal from Michael Whitmore, who continues his hot scoring form. In a half of limited chances for both sides it would be Takaro who would hang on to take a tight 1-0 halftime lead. Both sides came out in the second half eager to take full control of the game, but it would be the main man Michael Whitmore again who would put Takaro 2-0 up in the 68th minute. Despite the efforts from Whanganui Athletic Takaro would hang on to take a well-deserved, hard fought 2-0 win. Takaro move onto the next round and remain one of the teams to beat this season.

Charity Cup
In the Charity Cup game of the round, we had Chillmax Takaro AFC Titans taking on Levin AFC Reserves. The start of this game would be a tight affair with chances limited between the two sides. It would take something special to break the deadlock and that's what we got. Skoglund Park were treaty to an absolute beauty from Satore Chambers in the 41st minute with a bicycle kick that is an early contender for goal of the season. Credit to levin they stuck in there and managed to find a goal just after halftime in the 52nd minute thanks to Jayden Watson. However, Takaro showed their experience and class with goals from Brogan Hennessy (68th minute) and Phillip King (81st minute) to take the game 3-1.

John Brown Knockout Cup
In the only game scheduled in the John Brown Knockout Cup we had Get Glazed Whanganui Athletic Red Rockets take on St John’s Club Castlecliff. It would be Whanganui Athletic that would be dominant from start to finish taking a 6-0 win. All the damage was done in the first half with goals to Garry Allen 22’, James Dorgan 25’, Samuel Willis 31’ and Peter Czerwonka 44’. Athletic would put the cherry on top thanks to a second half double from Josh Ngapeka (71’, 85’)
Manawatu Master’s Knockout Cup
In the Manawatu Master’s Knockout Cup game of the round, we had MKM PN Marist Shamrock Rovers taking on Sportz Bar Whanganui Athletic Cosmos. Both teams sit at opposite ends of the league table, but anything can happen in cup games. Cosmos would take an early lead thanks to a goal from Tawhiri Pohio in the 12th minute. With halftime looming John Myszczyszyn would score in the last kick of the half to make it 1-1 at halftime. John Myszczyszyn would stun the favourites and make it 2-1 in the 50th minute. With an upset on the cards and time running out Adrian Ngaau would make it 2-2 in the 83rd minute to take it to penalties. They say anything can happen in pens and Marist would complete the ultimate upset taking the game 4-2 in penalties. It just shows that anything can happen in the cup.

Manawatu Women’s Championship
In this week’s game of the round, we had the two power houses Wallace Roofing Takaro AFC X-Force take on Chapple Architecture PN Marist Mayhem. It would be Marist Mayhem that would take a silm 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a goal from Paige Charlton in the 40th minute. Takaro would fire back early in the second half thanks to goal from Kowhai Eynon-Hudson in the 57th minute. Mayhem would take the lead again through a second goal to Paige in the 68th minute. With the game in the balance, it would be Brooke Argyle who would secure a 3-1 win in the 85th minute. Mayhem continues to be the team to beat.

In this week's game of the round, we had Nikki Groves Real Estate Whanganui Athletic Women taking on Rivercity Scrappers. Both teams were sitting on identical points before this match, so this had a tight affair written all over it. Both teams would score early, Athletic Francesca Cotter 15’, and Rivercity Isis Dennison-Downie 9’ (OG), to make it all even at 1-1 at halftime. It would be the one goal that separated the two sides, and this would fall to Jamie Munro of Rivercity in the 57th minute. Rivercity would hold on to a tight 2-1 victory.
